

The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) method was conducted to evaluate the utility of different oscillometric variables in distinguishing children with uncontrolled asthma from those with controlled asthma. The paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test was applied to test the difference before and after bronchodilator within groups.

The nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test was used to detect the difference in the outcomes between groups. Protocolīecause of the nonnormal distributions of the measurements and relatively small sample size, the parameters were summarized by medians with ranges, unless indicated otherwise. Written informed consent and assent were obtained from all participants and their parents or guardians. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Boards of the University of California, Irvine, and the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Healthy children without a history of asthma, allergies, or other lung diseases were also enrolled in the study as control subjects.

Patients were excluded from the study if they were given a diagnosis of any other pulmonary or cardiac disease, had any history of smoking within 12 months of enrollment, or were not able to perform a standard spirometric maneuver. Children were included in the study if they were 6 to 17 years of age and had a physician’s clinical diagnosis of asthma.
